Who we are

Brian Thompson, Founder

Brian did not stumble into radon mitigation. After a close family member was diagnosed with lung cancer — never having smoked — he started digging into environmental risk factors and could not ignore what he found about radon.

He spent years getting certified and learning the trade properly before launching Local Radon Mitigation in 2019. Today, Brian holds active NRPP/AARST credentials and is personally involved in every job the company takes on. When you call, you reach the person responsible for the work — not a scheduling desk.

I started this because I know what happens when radon gets ignored. I'm not interested in fast jobs — I'm interested in jobs that hold up.

Mission

What We Are Here to Do

We exist to reduce radon levels in homes across Wisconsin — properly, honestly, and with documentation to prove it worked. Every job we take on is designed around your specific home, tested before we close it out, and backed by a team that answers when something comes up.

That standard does not change based on how busy we are.

Vision

Where We Want to Take This

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. and one of the most preventable risks a homeowner can address. Most people find out too late — not because the solution is hard, but because no one told them to look.

Brian's goal for Local Radon Mitigation is to make radon testing and mitigation as routine in Wisconsin as a carbon monoxide detector — something every homeowner does as a matter of course. We are building that track record one installation at a time.

General Questions

What does radon mitigation actually do?

It creates a pressure difference between the soil beneath your foundation and the air inside your home. Using a dedicated pipe and a continuously running fan, the system pulls radon-laden soil gas out from under the slab and exhausts it above the roofline — before it has any chance to accumulate indoors.

The majority of residential installations are completed in four to eight hours on a single day. Homes with complex foundations, multiple entry points, or combination foundation types may require additional time, which we flag during the assessment

Your system runs continuously and quietly. We conduct a follow-up radon test to confirm levels have dropped. From there, periodic testing every two years is a reasonable practice — particularly if you modify your home's foundation, HVAC, or lower-level layout. Most systems require no regular maintenance beyond confirming the fan indicator is showing normal operation.

The main pipe runs from beneath the slab to the exterior, typically through a utility space, rim joist area, or closet. Our installers work with your home's layout to find the least intrusive route. The exterior components are functional and straightforward — comparable in appearance to a standard plumbing or HVAC penetration.

A documented, professionally installed system is an asset during a real estate transaction. Buyers and their agents understand what it means. It removes radon as a negotiation issue and demonstrates that the home has been maintained by someone who takes the details seriously

Installation cost depends on your foundation type, the number of suction points required, and your home's layout. We provide written, itemized quotes at no charge before any work begins. The range is consistent with what most homeowners consider straightforward compared to the long-term risk of unaddressed radon exposure.
